Fostering 101
You don't need a big house, a perfectly pet-proofed yard, or years of experience. You just need an open heart and a willingness to show up. Here's everything you need to know.
Start Your ApplicationWhat is fostering, exactly?
Fostering means temporarily opening your home to a dog in need — giving them love, stability, and care while a rescue organization finds them their forever family.
You're not committing forever. You're just committing for now. And "for now" can change a dog's life completely.
Foster dogs come from all kinds of situations — shelters facing overcrowding, owners who can no longer care for them, or dogs recovering from illness or trauma. What they all have in common is that they need a safe, calm place to land while the right family finds them.
What to expect
Your foster dog is processing everything — a new space, new smells, new humans. They might be quiet, anxious, or just observing. That's completely normal. Give them space, keep things calm, and let them come to you.
You'll start to see their real personality emerge. More tail wags. Maybe some zoomies. A little pushback on the rules. This is the good part — they're starting to trust you.
By week three or four, most dogs hit their stride. You'll work alongside the rescue on health checkups, socialization, and any training. Your feedback about the dog's personality helps find them the perfect forever home.
How long does a foster stay last?
Most foster stays are between two and eight weeks — though this varies a lot depending on the dog and their situation.
Emergency boarders might only need a few days. Dogs recovering from medical procedures or trauma sometimes need a few months of extra care and stability before they're ready for adoption.
You'll always know the expected timeframe before committing, and you can specify your availability in your application.
Short-term vs. long-term fostering
- Great for busy schedules or first-time fosters
- Perfect if you travel occasionally
- Ideal for dogs that are already adoptable and just need temporary space
- Lower commitment — try it before going longer
- Best for dogs needing extra stability — seniors, shy dogs, or medical fosters
- Deeper bond and more behavioral progress
- Higher likelihood of becoming a "foster fail" (adopting your foster!)
- The most transformative experience for both of you
